15-DECEMBER-2024 - SOLVING PROBLEMS_THE THINKING HAT PROCESS

THE MAIN THEME: WHEN DO I GET THERE?

TITLE: SOLVING PROBLEMS - THE THINKING HAT PROCESS

The bible verse for today’s devotional is: Romans 8:28 (NIV)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

Devotional:

Think of a time when you had to make a big decision, did it feel overwhelming? How did you go about it? How was it resolved?

Today, we want to consider a process that we can use to help us evaluate our options before making decisions or solving problems. This process is known as the ‘thinking hats’ process.

The thinking hats process requires the use of hats with six different  colors which represent different ways we can think through problems.

  1. The white hat means thinking objectively on the problem, with emphasis on facts and what is possible as far as we can see at the moment.
  2. The red hat represents us thinking about the problem ‘emotionally’. Here we consider how the problem makes us feel and list our perceptions and opinions on the problem.
  3. The third thinking hat is the black hat: while our black hat is on, we should think about the problem critically, skeptical, focusing on risks, and identifying problems, sort of ‘what could go wrong or not work out’ sort of contemplation.
  4. The yellow hat allows you to think optimistically about the situation- here we think of all the best-case scenarios.
  5. The blue hat allows you to think through problems in a structured way -  this is like a big picture overview of the issue;
  6. The green hat makes us think creatively about the issue- brainstorming new ideas and out-of-the-box solutions to the problem.

These different thought processes allow us to see all the possible angles to an issue and then when we have all these ‘out of the way’, we can make an informed decision on the best direction to go or how we intend to solve the problem.

It will take a bit of practice if you are hearing about it for the first time- you can research more about it and see how to incorporate it into your ‘destiny toolkit’. It’s well worth the try!

Thinking through challenges may take time; however, having a good structured thought process can help you get to where you are going not just faster but well.

Here are a few reflective questions:

  • What main decision am I making soon? Can I list out my ideas based on the six hats?
  • With all the options on the table, what is my best move concerning the issue?

Let Us Pray:

Dear God, I am grateful that there is no problem without a solution. Thank you for equipping me today with an additional way to review and solve problems that come my way in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Please say these words of affirmation. Say them, mean them, own them and live them:

  • God knows when I will get there.
  • I have a good understanding of how to handle all that comes my way!

Do have a fulfilling day. Take good care of yourself and see you tomorrow!
