TITLE: THE SAMSON SYDROME

The bible verse for today’s devotional is: Judges 14:3 (NIV)

His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised Philistines to get a wife? 

Devotional:

The book of Judges chapter 13 to 16 expounds the story of Samson’s birth and death. Despite his extraordinary divine strength, His character exhibited glaring flaws; lack of emotional control, impulsiveness and pride. We need to understand that everything about our life is about God.  We are created and called by him to fulfill a unique purpose. It is only wise to stay connected to Him as our source.

The Samson Syndrome can be deadly when we ignore our heavenly calling by living for our sensual appetites, despising the consecration God requires of us and mingling with people and things we should avoid. Though God is merciful, extending grace and time for us to return, He will not allow us to always walk away unscathed from open disobedience to His word. God’s sovereignty means that He will use our disobedience for His good, while we suffer the consequences. (Samson died with his enemies). God’s plans cannot be thwarted.

Samson’s relationship with God was unhealthy, which impacted his choices. He surrounded himself with unfriendly friends both male and female. 

There are those around us to sabotage us, snuff out our light, and make sure we do not fulfil our calling. We need to stay connected to God.

God yearns for our need for Him. Samson's lack of self-control was evident when he lost his focus revealing his secrets to an enemy.  A lifestyle of disobedience and wrong choices grieves the Holy Spirit leading to spiritual blindness. This was what made Samson culpable for more deceptions and manipulation.

Disobedience can hamper when we will get there; when we will achieve purpose.

Here are a few reflective questions:

  • Am I still on track with the purpose and calling God bestowed on me?
  • Am I using the gifts, talents, blessings for God’s purpose?

 Let us pray

Dear Lord, thank you for your word to me today, May the eyes of our understanding be enlightened that we may experience the hope of your calling and the riches of the glory of your inheritance. Amen

TITLE: GOD’S TIMING

The bible verse for today’s devotional is: Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

Devotional:

The bible records in 1 Chronicles 12:32 that the sons of Isaacha had an ability to discern the time, they had men who understood the times, with knowledge of what Israel should do.  Understanding God’s timing is often essential for appreciating and accepting our experiences. This will help in taking proper actions that would launch us into His perfect will. 

Moments when God changes the happenings, circumstances or situations around us demands our attention and submission. God wants us to understand and recognize the divine shifts or seasons in our lives. 

The Greek words for time include: Chronos (earthly time), Kairos (a divine appointment), Neos (numerically new), Kainos (unprecedented), Pleroo (fullness of time). It is worth noting that God is in all these timings to perfect His will in our life. To align with God’s timing, we must accept responsibility to do our part, build our trust, activate our faith, hone our flexibility and hold fast to God’s word and promises.

Father Abraham and Sarah experienced God’s timing first hand, against their human timing. Let us remember that God does not work with our schedule, a thousand years is like a day before him, this helps us to accept our period of waiting with more grace and patience. 

As we move into our God-ordained destinies, it is reassuring to know that God has already seen the future from the beginning, as we trust and obey him, he makes all things beautiful in his time.

  • Am I putting in my best?
  • Do I trust God’s timing?
  • How do I handle expectations against the realities of life? 
  • Do I experience peace in every situation I encounter?

Lord, I pray for the spirit of discernment and the gift of perspective that aligns with your will for my life. Amen

TITLE: CREATING A SUPER LIFESTYLE

 Devotional:

The desire to be all we can be is in everyone. Sometimes, people may forget or refuse to push through obstacles to get to their desired outcome due to past disappointments. There is an old saying “little drops of water makes a mighty ocean”, in the same way, our everyday thoughts, words and actions contribute to the beautiful story that we are creating with our lives.  

Our verse for today ties in nicely with a quote by Martha Beck that says “The way we do anything is the way we do everything.” So how do we position ourselves to be and do our best every day to help us create a super lifestyle?

Creating a super lifestyle means accepting that you are enough, that you deserve the best as God’s creation, it means defining your values and choosing to be guided by your core values, it means committing each day to being and doing the best you can be with what you have and knowing that with each passing day you will get better, its understanding that great things take time so you must trust the process and keep being and doing your best, it's knowing that challenges will come, and choosing to forge ahead, it's knowing that it is okay to take a break and get back into the fight even when you fall, it's knowing that no one else can take your place- that you are unique so you should ride your own tide without trying to undo others, it’s knowing that you are not meant to do it alone so you can ask for help, it's being mindful and enjoying now as you move towards your destiny, it's remembering to stay grateful.

Remember, You are not waiting on the sidelines to be happy only when you have achieved whatever you desire- you should be intentional about celebrating today, as you journey into your glorious tomorrow.  Your super life is now, your super life is tomorrow, and you create all with each thought and action.

  • Taking an audit of my day, is there something I do or say that is not moving me close to my goals?
  • What positive thing can I replace it with?

Let Us Pray:

Dear God, I am grateful that your plans for me are plans of good. Help me align with your plan and be my best and do my best each day in Jesus’ name. Amen.

 THE MAIN THEME: WHEN DO I GET THERE?

TITLE: SOLVING PROBLEMS - THE THINKING HAT PROCESS

 The bible verse for today’s devotional is: Romans 8:28 (NIV)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

Devotional:

Think of a time when you had to make a big decision, did it feel overwhelming? How did you go about it? How was it resolved?

Today, we want to consider a process that we can use to help us evaluate our options before making decisions or solving problems. This process is known as the ‘thinking hats’ process.

The thinking hats process requires the use of hats with six different  colors which represent different ways we can think through problems. 

  1. The white hat means thinking objectively on the problem, with emphasis on facts and what is possible as far as we can see at the moment. 
  2. The red hat represents us thinking about the problem ‘emotionally’. Here we consider how the problem makes us feel and list our perceptions and opinions on the problem. 
  3. The third thinking hat is the black hat: while our black hat is on, we should think about the problem critically, skeptical, focusing on risks, and identifying problems, sort of ‘what could go wrong or not work out’ sort of contemplation. 
  4. The yellow hat allows you to think optimistically about the situation- here we think of all the best-case scenarios. 
  5. The blue hat allows you to think through problems in a structured way -  this is like a big picture overview of the issue; 
  6. The green hat makes us think creatively about the issue- brainstorming new ideas and out-of-the-box solutions to the problem.

These different thought processes allow us to see all the possible angles to an issue and then when we have all these ‘out of the way’, we can make an informed decision on the best direction to go or how we intend to solve the problem.

It will take a bit of practice if you are hearing about it for the first time- you can research more about it and see how to incorporate it into your ‘destiny toolkit’. It’s well worth the try!

Thinking through challenges may take time; however, having a good structured thought process can help you get to where you are going not just faster but well.

Here are a few reflective questions:

  • What main decision am I making soon? Can I list out my ideas based on the six hats?
  • With all the options on the table, what is my best move concerning the issue?

Dear God, I am grateful that there is no problem without a solution. Thank you for equipping me today with an additional way to review and solve problems that come my way in Jesus’ name. Amen.

TITLE: THE SUPER THOUGHT PROCESS

 The bible verse for today’s devotional is: 1 John 4:1 (NIV)

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Devotional:

Whatever we believe about anything, starts first as information- something we hear or read, and over time we find ourselves developing strong convictions on the topic and form our opinions on the subject matter.

Our bible verse today is one of several scriptures that tells us to critically examine what we hear, so that we don’t end up believing and acting on a lie. In our quest to achieve whatever we set out to achieve, we will intentionally or unintentionally come in contact with information, some of which will be helpful while others will not be so helpful. Some information may have proved useful for others in the same situation but may not be relevant to us.

Our call today is to be proactive, rather than simply consuming information, let’s critically review and ascertain if what we have been told or what we have read has passed the test according to Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Here are a few reflective questions:

  • What can I do to ensure I have vetted the information I receive, especially concerning an important matter?
  • Who do I have in my life that I can run an idea or a piece of controversial information with for a second opinion?

 Let Us Pray:

Dear God, help me apply wisdom as I consider my options each day, so that in all things at all times, I will bring glory to your name in Jesus’ name. Amen.

  • I make the right decisions with the help of the Holy Spirit.
